Emotional Intelligence Is Changing the Way We Work - Here’s How It’s Taking Root at Radius Fire

In fire protection, we often talk about code compliance, inspections, and emergency response times. But what about communication, self-awareness, and how teams interact? At Radius Fire, we believe technical knowledge and human connection go hand-in-hand.

That’s where emotional intelligence (EQ) comes in. What started as one employee’s personal journey has grown into something bigger: an internal movement to elevate workplace culture, improve relationships, and drive better results.

In this blog, we’ll explore what emotional intelligence is, how it’s being used at Radius Fire, and why it matters in the fire protection industry.

What Is Emotional Intelligence?

In simple terms, emotional intelligence is the ability to understand, manage, and express emotions, both your own and others’.

Unlike IQ, which is fixed, emotional intelligence can be learned and improved over time. According to Angela, a long-time team member at Radius Fire and the driving force behind our EQ sessions, emotional intelligence helps you:

  • Pause before reacting
  • Respond with empathy and intention
  • Communicate effectively, even in stressful situations

At its core, EQ is about connection, and it’s a skill that benefits everyone from leadership to technicians in the field.

How EQ Training Started at Radius Fire

Angela’s journey with EQ began while pursuing her Bachelor of Arts in Leadership from Trinity Western University. Her coursework focused heavily on self-awareness and leadership development, laying the foundation for what would become Radius Fire’s homegrown EQ initiative.

Inspired by what she learned, Angela brought the concept into the workplace. With support from Radius Fire leadership, she introduced emotional intelligence workshops in departments that were facing challenges.

“I wrote all this stuff out and we did EQ training. We did color tests, self-awareness, listening skills… and the feedback was incredible. It worked.”

-      Angela, Radius Fire

The results spoke for themselves. Engagement improved. Communication became clearer. And soon, other departments and even external clients were asking for EQ sessions too.

Core Skills of Emotional Intelligence

There are four foundational pillars to emotional intelligence:

  1. Self-Awareness: Recognizing your own emotions and how they affect your actions.
  2. Self-Management: Controlling your emotional reactions and adapting in the moment.
  3. Social Awareness: Understanding the emotions and needs of others.
  4. Relationship Management: Building strong, healthy relationships through clear and empathetic communication.

Each skill helps individuals navigate conflict, reduce stress, and build trust, whether in the office or on a job site.

Modeling Emotional Intelligence at Work

EQ isn’t just a one-time workshop, it’s a daily practice. Angela shared a few key ways she models emotional intelligence at Radius:

  • Using a “Truth Teller”: She partners with a trusted colleague to hold her accountable on specific behaviors she’s working on.
  • Practicing Self-Awareness: From facial expressions to active listening, Angela constantly reflects on how she shows up in meetings.
  • Encouraging Curiosity: In training sessions, she teaches others to ask open-ended questions and stay curious, especially when opinions differ.

“Just because you’re curious about someone’s point of view doesn’t mean it has to change yours. But that curiosity builds trust, empathy, and understanding.”

- Angela, Radius Fire

Building a Culture That Cares

What makes EQ training at Radius Fire truly unique isn’t just the content, it’s how it began: organically, through a culture that genuinely values people. When leadership recognized Angela’s strength and passion for emotional intelligence, they gave her the freedom to share it across teams.

That’s the kind of culture we believe in, one that supports growth not just in fire safety systems, but in the people behind them.

If you’re looking to begin your own journey with EQ, a great first step is the “Emotional Intelligence 2.0“ assessment by Dr. Travis Bradberry. It offers clear insights and actionable tips to help improve each core EQ skill, no matter your industry or role.
